i used to hate my father. truly hate him. one time after an especially severe beating i etched those words into the face my desk as an act of defiance. the next day i only felt ashamed… immediately feeling guilt for writing such a hurtful thing in plain sight for my father to see. he is the master at making people feel guilty. guilt for being a bad daughter. bad wife. bad person.
