We just received the monster September issue of Vogue in the office. The monolith of a magazine- seriously, it’s 2 pages shy of 800- is basically 5% content and 95% ads and actually almost 100% ads if you consider editorials just glorified ads.

It got me thinking about where I was in my life exactly one year ago when I’d gotten my hands on the September 2007 issue. Sitting on the plane with big hopes for our big move to the big city pulling out the pages I liked and making my nice neat little piles of pretty pictures. I was a little (ok a LOT) more naive about the fashion industry, life, love, friends… It’s amazing how being pushed into the crazy vortex of culture, people, alcohol, drugs, etc that is NYC makes you change, mature and perhaps become jaded so quickly. My friends back home are preparing for weddings and paying their first mortgages. I’m struggling to pay rent on my studio. I’m single for the first time in six years and frankly the NY dating scene is looking pretty damn bleak.

I feel hardened. Nothing really phases me anymore. Family drama, friend drama, guy drama. I don’t want to become some hardened shell of a person. A ghost of who I used to be.

I used to care about the people around me. Now I find myself on the phone listening but not really listening. Just hearing the words and *whir goes my processor* chugging out the obligatory response. I feel like I’m taking the role of an anonymous hotline operator. Listening to the whispered cries of a faceless “victim” in the middle of the night. All the while just painting my nails…

my 25th birthday (and first birthday in NYC) was perfect. i didn’t have a crazy party in vegas or win a million dollars but it was still awesome. thank you everyone for making it so special.

went with greg to the soho apple store to get an iphone in the morning. there was surprisingly no line and greg bought the iphone (which i am in love with) for me! got into work to find orchids and a balloon on my desk from my sa. had a delicious free lunch with my coworkers. was “surprised” with cake, strawberries and an amex giftcard when we got back into the office. karli comes over after work with more birthday gifts and beer! 8 of us have a nice dinner at fiore (cute restaurant!) which was also paid for (thanks guys!). rich got me a giftcard to uo. then on to 2for1 drink night at bar matchless where the debacuhery ensued again paid for by my friends. wake up late this morning and go into work late but it’s ok b/c i’d mentioned i might be late and the boss man is on vacation.

all in all… a WONDERFUL birthday. couldn’t have planned a better one.

hopefully friday will be a repeat awesome birthday celebration!

does anyone else see the same people on the subway during their morning commute. i do. there’s extremely thin older woman who always gets a quad whole milk latte from starbucks (i know it’s a quad b/c i’ve read the markings on her cup. yes, i once was your local barista), obnoxious bluetooth headset guy who also wears equally obnoxious shirts, and my favorite is fashionista-esque goth rocker guy that gets on at time square who’s always wearing a stack of bracelets and wristbands to mid-forearm.

i always find myself wondering-does he ever take them off? does he wear them in the shower? does he wear them while making love to his gf/bf/lover?

and another one bites the dust...
